Though he was only billed as the lead actor, Dutt's trademarks are evident in this award-winning Berlin Film Festival Competition entry, leading some to have speculated that he was the film's ghost director. In this lavish period drama, Dutt stars as a lower-class but educated man who arrives to colonial Calcutta and becomes a servant to a high society Bengal family. After leaving to become an architect, he returns to the household and finds it in partial ruins. This is Dutt's most significant work before his death two years later.
